Michel Vion, the Secretary General of the International Ski Federation, on Saturday praised the ongoing Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships in Georgia’s winter resort of Bakuriani as the “best tournament” held with “very good outcome” and stressed Georgia had everything to become a winter sports destination.
The Georgian Mountain Trails Agency cited Vion as saying the World Championship was important for Georgia’s tourism development and the country gained experience by holding such a high-ranking tournament for the first time.
I will repeat this often that you [Georgians] have to be proud of the work [carried out] and the results you produced”, the Secretary General added.
Bakuriani has been hosting the tournament for the seventeenth day, which officially opened on February 19 and involves about 700 athletes from 42 countries competing in 30 categories. The championship has been broadcasted to more than 175 million people.
Later today the last sports event will be held, where Georgia will hand over the flag to the next host country - Switzerland. The closing ceremony will be conducted on Sunday in the Championship Village.
