Johan Eliasch, the President of the International Ski Federation, on Saturday said Georgia’s winter resort of Bakuriani had “a lot of potential” to host “more events” as part of the World Championships and praised the quality of ski slopes and snow in the resort.

Eliasch, along with Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili and Irakli Burchuladze, the Director of Georgian Mountain Trails Agency, assessed the Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships in Bakuriani and inspected the infrastructure built for the tournament by the Georgian authorities, the Economy Ministry said.

He also evaluated the work carried out by the organising committee of the tournament and stressed he was “very impressed” by the job done, which proved that “such a great tournament” could be organised not only in Central Europe but also in Georgia.

I think these mountains [in Bakuriani] have a lot of potential in the summer months and early in this season, as people have to travel to the other hemisphere for training and Georgia is much nearer. [...] This is great PR for the country and, in general, for the promotion of tourism”, Eliasch added.

In her turn, Kvrivishvili said the Government hosted the Championships “properly” and noted that Georgia, particularly Bakuriani, was “in the focus of attention” of the international media, which would “ultimately” strengthen the image of the country as a mountain tourism destination.

Bakuriani was granted the hosting rights of the tournament by a FIS congress in 2018. The competition is being held with the support of the Georgian Government and organised by the Mountain Trails Agency and the Georgian Ski Federation.
