Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Tuesday said Georgia’s mountain resort of Gudauri would take a “worthy place” among the world's “leading ski resorts” after the completion of updates and modernisation of its infrastructure.
The Ministry of Economy said Davitashvili inspected ongoing preparations for the coming winter season in the location, with the infrastructure including two new ropeway complexes, construction works of which is being carried out by the Austrian-Swiss company Doppelmayr Garaventa Group.
Six-seater cable cars operated on 1,249- and 1,369-metre-long ropeways that will carry 1,800-2,400 passengers per hour, with the new infrastructure set to be installed in the New Gudauri area of the resort.
“The new investments made by the state in Gudauri this year are especially important and will completely renew the Gudauri resort and give it new opportunities for development”, he said in comments.
“In the shortest time - in fact, within five to six months - we were able to build two new cableways, which will be opened for the season of this year - and our visitors, tourists, fans of skiing sports will see the updated infrastructure”, Davitashvili added.
The official also said the overall strategy for Gudauri development included providing “simultaneous service” of up to 17,000 skiers round-the-clock and noted the Ministry would follow this plan with the advancement of infrastructure.
The Minister also mentioned “intensive work” and “significant investments” made to set up new ski infrastructure in the mountain resort of Bakuriani, which would “serve and make the resort attractive for a long period of time”.
He also pointed out “important works” in the north-western region of Svaneti and the Goderdzi ski resort in the mountainous part of the western Adjara region, and noted visitors and tourists of the country would “appreciate much higher level and quality of ski tracks”.
Additional supporting infrastructure, signs, information boards, electronic monitors and other “necessary attributes” will also be improved for the locations, Davitashvili added, noting further development of infrastructure in Gudauri would continue in the coming years.
