Georgia’s north-western highland Svaneti region will host two qualifying competitions of the international winter sports contest - Freeride World Tour for the second time between Thursday and Sunday, the United States Agency for International Development said on Tuesday.
The competitions, including skiing on difficult and mountainous terrain in untracked snow both on skis and on a snowboard, will be held at the Tetnuldi mountain ski resort, with about 50 Georgian and foreign athletes taking part in the event.
Various cultural, gastronomic and entertainment programmes are planned throughout the freeride week, which was “successfully” hosted in Georgia last year too, where athletes from 16 different countries participated.
Holding such an event is significant, as it will highlight the potential of Georgian mountains and ski resorts on an international scale. It will increase awareness for local and foreign visitors, which in turn will contribute to the development of tourism in Georgia”, the USAID noted.
The award ceremony of the second freeride qualifying competition, organised by the Georgian company White Rabbit [with the accreditation of the Freeride World Tour], will be attended by the representatives of supporting governmental and international organisations, including the USAID Economic Security Programme, Georgia’s Mountain Tracks Agency, the country’s National Tourism Administration, and the Georgian Ski Federation.
The representatives of the GRETA project, co-funded by the European Union, the Swedish Embassy and the Austrian Development Agency, and officials of Mestia Municipality and Svaneti DMO will also take part in the award event.
