Georgia’s mountainous Svaneti region hosts experienced, amateur hikers within international adventure project

Northern Georgia’s mountainous region of Svaneti has hosted 110 experienced and amateur hikers from eight countries on an international adventure event Highlander Georgia from Thursday till Saturday.

The Georgian National Tourism Administration said the Georgian and foreign participants, on the first day of the event, explored the village of Becho through the pass of Tshakvzagari, reaching the first control point in Mestia and getting acquainted with the local cuisine. 

On Friday the participants were joined by the Highlander Experience hikers and passed through Zhamushi, Cholashi and Zhabeshi, as well as other villages and camped in the highland ski resort Tetnuldi, with the route ending on Saturday in the village of Khalde.

The GNTA said that all participants who reached the finish line earned Highlander status and noted at the end of the day the award ceremony would be held.

The route, together with other participants, was passed by Thomas Mühlmann, the Austrian Ambassador to Georgia and Fadi Hachicho, the Managing Director of Highlander UAE, as well as Georgian freestyle wrestler and Olympic champion Vladimir Khinchegashvili and Peter Watson, Highlander Adventure Global Ambassador.

"The European Union, Sweden and Austria, within the framework of the GRETA project, support the Highlander Georgia event. Our goal is the development of sustainable mountain tourism and organic agriculture in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti and Zemo Imereti regions. We believe that our productive cooperation with Highlander Georgia will raise the awareness of Svaneti and put it on the global adventure tourism map", Mühlmann said.
