Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday hailed the “very important, historical” projects implemented with Azerbaijan, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the Black Sea Strategic Submarine Electricity Cable projects, noting the relations between the countries have been “tested by time” and “at the highest level”.

In his address at a panel discussion Eurasia's Middle Corridor: From Pathway to Highway within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Garibashvili said Azerbaijan had allocated additional funding for the completion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project, which would be ready in 2024. The capacity of the railway, currently being under construction, has been 23 million tons per year, adding after the completion of its modernisation the capacity would amount to 48 million tons.

The Head of the Government highlighted that Georgia had signed an Agreement on the “ambitious” Black Sea Submarine Electricity Cable project in Bucharest in December, along with Azerbaijan, Romania and Hungary, supported by the European Union, and stressed Georgia would have an increase in the turnover of goods by the project, as it would be the “shortest” route between Europe and the producer countries, the Government Administration said.

Garibashvili said he was “very optimistic” about the “great potential” of the project and all four countries were “motivated” to develop this corridor, adding the officials of the countries had agreed on a road map in this regard in Kazakhstan.
