The Georgian government is negotiating with Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers and is going to import an additional one million doses of Pfizer in June or July, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said today.
Garibashvili said he was personally involved in the process of negotiations and held a number of phone conversations with the president of Pfizer.
PM Garibashvili also said negotiations are progressing with Sinopharm and Sinovac pharmaceuticals on the supply of additional doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The same, he said, applies to Moderna and Novovaxon and the procurement of new vaccines.
We [the Georgian Gov’t] are quite optimistic. Agreements have been already signed and additional doses will be received in the coming months. No delays will occur in the process of vaccination”, said Garibashvili.
Georgia started coronavirus vaccination in mid-March when the country received the first 43,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine.
As of now, Georgia is using AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm vaccines for certain groups of people.
Those eligible for vaccination can register at booking.moh.gov.ge.
Georgia has received the 100,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine earlier today. However, Sinopharm vaccination will not start until it received approval from the World Health Organisation.
Mass Covid-19 immunisation is expected to start in Georgia in July, announces Head of the Georgian National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze, adding that it does not mean that getting the vaccination against coronavirus will become mandatory.
Vaccination with Pfizer will be allowed in four clinics of Tbilisi: Republican Hospital, Bokeria clinic, Caucasus Medical Centre and Amtel hospital, in two clinics of Kutaisi and in Batumi Republican Hospital in the Adjara region. Individuals receiving either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines against Covid-19 will have to stay at clinics for 45 minutes, instead of 30 minutes to be observed if there are any adverse effects.
UNICEF Representative in Georgia Ghassan Khalil has received the coronavirus vaccine. "Vaccination is crucial in combating this pandemic which is affecting every one of us and children as well. No one is safe until everyone is safe”, he said.
