The Georgian capital of Tbilisi will have a new sports complex which will host 10,000 people for the European Championship in basketball (Eurobasket) in 2021, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport  Shalva Gogoladze stated on TV programme ‘Sport on Imedi’.

We had a plan to reconstruct a hall in sports complex ‘New Tbilisi’, but the team of architects concluded that a new hall could be built on the existing area next to ‘New Tbilisi’. The new hall with 10,000 seats will fully meet Eurobasket requirements”, said Gogoladze.

The new hall will be built next to the sports complex ‘New Tbilisi’ which opened in 2015.  It will connect existing buildings through tunnels. A unified sports complex with three halls will host a total of 13,800 people.

The new arena will have two-storey parking for 400 cars.

Gogoladze said that the construction process will start soon and will be finished in May or June 2021.

Prague (Czech Republic), Tbilisi (Georgia), Milan (Italy) and Cologne (Germany) will host the first phase groups while the final round of the tournament will be held in the German capital city of Berlin.

Eurobasket 2021 will be held on September 2-19, 2021.
