The Georgian capital city of Tbilisi will host EuroBasket 2021 in a new sports complex, Georgian Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Mikheil Batiashvili stated today.
Batiashvili says that it is a great victory for Georgian basketball and the country itself to be allowed to host the championship.
It has confirmed once again that we are members of the European family,” Batiashvili stated.
A new sports hall will be constructed in sports complex ‘New Tbilisi’ which opened in 2015.
Georgia will be one of the four countries to host FIBA Eurobasket group matches in 2021. The FIBA Europe board announced this decision yesterday in Munich, Germany.
Yesterday in Munich Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili presented a video clip about Georgia to the FIBA board and said the country is ready to host the EuroBasket 2021.
The board heard presentations from seven countries in total.
Prague (Czech Republic), Tbilisi (Georgia), Milan (Italy) and Cologne (Germany) will host the first phase groups while the final round of the tournament will be held in the German capital city of Berlin.
Estonia, Slovenia and Hungary were also candidates to host the tournament.
EuroBasket 2021 will be held on August 17-29, 2021.
