A massive forest fire that broke out a week ago in Georgia’s Borjomi Gorge has been extinguished, but the special headquarters that was set up upon the Prime Minister’s order to handle the disaster remains in the gorge to follow the developments.
After a joint meeting earlier this morning, the Ministers of Interior, Defense and Energy studied the situation on the site from helicopters.
Earlier: 10:28A massive forest fire that broke out a week ago in Georgia’s Borjomi Gorge has been largely extinguished, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said last night.
Kvirikashvili said the fire has been extinguished at all the hot spots; however, he said other minor locations will be dealt with in the coming days.

Thanking everyone who contributed to firefighting process, Kvirikashvili said these people have managed "to save the wealth and beauty of our amazing forest".
I want to thank you for your devotion and heroism. I am proud that our country has such brave men”, Kvirikashvili addressed everyone engaged in firefighting operation.
Several thousands of people have been engaged in the firefighting operation that started last Sunday including:
- 1,000 soldiers from the Eastern Command of the Georgian Armed Forces,
- 1,500 Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani firefighters, rescuers and rangers,
- 650 representatives of the Georgian Interior Ministry’s special tasks groups
- 900 emergency servicemen and doctors.
Moreover, 9 Georgian, Azerbaijani, Turkish and Belarus helicopters have been battling the blaze.

The European Union (EU) has activated its Copernicus program to monitor the fire in Borjomi Gorge and it will let Georgia access the satellite footage.
The Georgian Armed Forces have joined firefighting efforts in Georgia’s Borjomi Gorge where a massive forest fire broke out five days ago and is still burning.
Georgian citizens, business and banking sector representatives are teaming up to restore the forest burnt following the recent devastating wildfire in the Borjomi Gorge, with several social campaigns already in full swing.
A 20-litre canister full of petrol has been recently found at the Borjomi forest and investigation is already underway in this direction.

A fire erupted over about 0.5 hectares of forest lands on a mountain near the village of Sviri in the Akhaltsikhe municipality in southern Georgia yesterday evening. An Interior Ministry helicopter has been working to localise the fire since this morning.

A fire has broken out in the forest of Chailuri in Kakheti region in eastern Georgia earlier today, which according to the Georgia’s Interior Ministry’s Emergency Service has been localised. Fire-fighters who immediately went to deal with the fire have taken care to prevent the further escalation.
A fire that broke out in a state-owned building in the central district of Aghmashenebeli in Tbilisi late at night has been localised. Representative of the Emergency Management Service Mamuka Kirimelashvili said 21 fire-fighting brigades have been mobilized to extinguish the fire. Over a hundred fire-fighters were mobilised to put out the fire that had spread over some 1,500 sq.m.
A fire that broke out in forests in Ozurgeti, in Georgia's western region of Guria late last night has been extinguished. The Emergency Management Service said the fire affected some 30ha in the village of Shemokmedi.
Up to 150 firefighters, 30 foresters and a border police helicopter have been brought in to extinguish a fire in the Borjomi Gorge in central Georgia.
A forest fire that erupted yesterday evening still continues near the village of Sakavre, in Gori Municipality. Firefighters and helicopters worked all night long as heavy smoke was observed over an area of 40 hectares.
Firefighters are still working to fully extinguish the fire that broke out in Georgia’s Shida Kartli region a couple of days ago. The Emergency Management Service of the Georgian Interior Ministry said the fire has been contained and there is no threat of its spreading further.
A total of 3,000 Caucasian pine seedlings have been planted during the autumn in order to bring new life to the burnt Borjomi forest, the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture reports.
