Georgia is among the 38 nations that made the referral for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to probe alleged war crimes in Ukraine.
Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said on Thursday the country's participation in the referral was a reflection of its "clear position that in these circumstances we stand with Ukraine and with the idea of protecting principles of international law."
On Wednesday, ICC Prosecutor, Karim A.A. Khan, announced the opening of an investigation into alleged war crimes committed so far during the ongoing conflict.
The list of referring countries ranges from Nordic states to Eastern European republics, as well as the United Kingdom, Australia and others.
Earlier the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted in reference to the inquiry, saying “38 countries from across the world have made the largest ever referral to the International Criminal Court for Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine.”
We are crystal clear that Putin cannot commit these horrific acts with impunity," the UK government head said.
