Support for Ukraine is unwavering and unity is the most important message to send to Russia amid its invasion of the country, US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said after a meeting with Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, on Monday.

Degnan made comments on the Georgian government’s position on the conflict, noting the country had shown a clear position on the matter both in the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

She also welcomed comments by the country's Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, calling them "important statements" regarding the Russian aggression and highlighting the support lent by the foreign ministry at the United Nations, the OSCE and the Council of Europe.

The Ambassador also praised the humanitarian assistance and support initiatives by Georgian citizens, businesses and the government, ranging from offers of free accommodation to Ukrainian citizens stranded in Georgia, to the government’s humanitarian package for Ukraine.

Russia began its invasion last week, following President Putin’s announcement of the recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk on February 21.
