Kelly Degnan, the United States ambassador to Georgia, on Thursday said the US “greatly appreciated” Georgia's support for Ukraine in international forums since the beginning of the ongoing Russian invasion of the country.

In an interview with Imedi TV, Degnan highlighted the “prompt action” of the Georgian National Bank in compliance with the financial sanctions imposed on Russia due to its invasion, and the “impressive” humanitarian assistance provided by Georgian citizens and the government.

Degnan noted the US had made it clear to Georgian authorities from the beginning of the conflict that it “fully understood” the special situation in which Georgia found itself amid the war in Ukraine, with 20 percent of its territory under the Russian occupation.

In her remarks over the matter, the ambassador underlined the United States “appreciated” the steps taken by Georgia to show support for Ukraine within its capability.

Degnan rejected allegations by some players in Georgia’s domestic politics that the United States wanted to “open a second front” of the ongoing conflict in Georgia by noting “The United States does not want and it is not in our interest for this war to spread to Georgia or any other country”.

The ambassador added “[W]e are doing everything we can to restore peace and end this war as quickly as possible”.
