Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili has praised the ongoing works for preparing the winter resort of Bakuriani for hosting the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championship in February, the Ministry of Economy said on Thursday.

Kvrivishvili said the championships were "the most important event for our country", adding the infrastructure would also help extend the ski season in Bakuriani.

Kvrivishvili noted the location was being upgraded with new cable cars, two artificial reservoirs for the snowmaking system and six new tracks ahead of the competition, with ₾265 million ($100mln) spent on the project.

Thirty competitions in seven disciplines will be held during the World Championships. We did quite a lot of hard work in the shortest possible time to make the resort fully ready to host the event. And today, Bakuriani already has an infrastructure of international standards, which will give us the opportunity to competently host the World Championships”, Kvrivishvili said.

The Deputy Minister also noted the event would see the "most rated" international sports media arriving in Bakuriani to cover the contest. "During two weeks, Bakuriani will be in the epicentre of sports media, which will make a very important contribution in terms of increasing the awareness of Bakuriani and our country in general", Kvrivishvili said.

The 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championship will be hosted between February 16 and March 5. Georgia was granted the hosting rights of the tournament by the International Ski Federation congress in 2018.
