Over 2,000 international visitors from 42 countries have already registered to visit Georgia for the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in the country’s winter resort of Bakuriani between February 16 and March 5, the Georgian Government’s press office said on Friday.
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili pointed out the importance of the international event at a meeting with state agencies involved in preparatory works for the championship, with Georgia making history by hosting the Championships for the first time next year.
The officials noted the location was being upgraded with new cable cars, two artificial reservoirs for the snowmaking system and six new tracks ahead of the competition, with ₾265 million ($100mln) spent on the project.
Thirty competitions across seven disciplines are scheduled as part of the International Ski Federation event, with the governing body having sent its representatives in November to inspect the infrastructure.
Georgia was granted the hosting rights of the tournament by FIS congress in 2018. The programme for the Championships is available here.
