The International Ski Federation (FIS) has handed over its standard flag to the International Ski Federation of Georgia as the ski resort of Bakuriani will host the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships.
According to tradition, the flag was to be received from China, the previous host country of the World Championship, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, China refused to host the World Cup and the tournament was held in several countries.
President of the International Ski Federation Johan Eliasch handed over the flag to Georgia.
I think that Georgia has a phenomenal skiing environment. It has great potential and we [FIS] want to find such new places for the FIS championships”, Eliasch told Euronews Georgia.
In 2022, Bakuriani will host the World Cup stages of Freestyle Ski and Snowboard, for which artificial snow systems and new tracks will be prepared.
The Secretary General FIS Michel Vion told Euronews Georgia that hosting a mountain skiing competition is related to many challenges, though Bakuriani is preparing very well for it.
There are many competitions to be held, the preparatory process to be passed, numerous tracks and tribunes to be prepared... This requires a large investment, so we are happy that Georgia and Bakuriani will provide everything and will host the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships”, said Vion.
On February 19, 2022 Bakuriani will host Europa cap stages of Parallel Slalom (Snowboard), while there will be Giant Slalom on February 20.
