Georgian citizens and businesses have offered free overnight accommodation and other types of assistance to Ukrainian citizens in the country and are unable to return to Ukraine due to the start of a military invasion of the country by Russian forces earlier today.

A Facebook group Glory to Ukraine Support From Georgia was created to assist Ukrainians in Georgia with housing, while the Spend 4 Seasons in Georgia tourist campaign has also dedicated its platform to the support of individuals from Ukraine.

In the two social media groups, dozens of Georgians have already offered their support to citizens of the country, posting they were ready to provide accommodation to those in need. Various restaurants, hotels, hostels, hospitals and stores have also joined the initiative, offering their services free of charge.

The Georgian National Tourism Administration released a statement earlier today for all visitors from Ukraine, as well as their hosts in Georgia, to contact them on their hotline - reachable through the number 0 800 800 909 - “in case of need”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared a state of war and a curfew across the country earlier today, following the Kremlin’s decision to move Russian troops into the country’s internationally recognised borders, while the European Union has declared the Ukrainian airspace a conflict zone.

Ukraine’s government also announced on Thursday a temporary shutdown of civil aviation flights for security reasons, before several civilian airline companies cancelled their flights to the country.

The international community has condemned the invasion, expressing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned the Russian Federation of “swift and firm response”.

The European Union, United States and several other countries have already imposed sanctions on Russia.
