The Georgian government will make sure citizens of Ukraine stranded in Georgia by the outbreak of conflict in their country are “taken care of”, Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili said on Monday.
Davitashvili made the assurances while revealing the Georgian National Tourism Administration had already been instructed to support the visitors from Ukraine, adding “we will work with all of the individuals to ensure they have normal living conditions [while stranded in Georgia].”
The Minister also highlighted the significance of the humanitarian aid provided to Ukraine by Georgia so far, adding his government wanted to present “Georgia in the best possible way” by standing up for Ukraine’s citizens.
He also noted Georgia is "fully prepared to provide maximum support if there are refugees" from Ukraine, adding "assistance and humanitarian support from our side will continue, Georgia is in solidarity in this part and we stand clearly and unequivocally on the side of the truth.”
The state official also thanked the private business sector for joining initiatives and offers to the stranded visitors for providing them with resources and services for free.
Georgia sent humanitarian aid worth one million GEL ($315,000/€279,000) to Ukraine yesterday, while the Georgian Post has announced it will deliver humanitarian parcels to the country free of charge.
Georgian citizens and businesses have also started to offer free overnight accommodation and other types of assistance to Ukrainians in the country through social media groups since the breakout of the war, while the Georgian National Tourism Administration launched a hotline for the purpose, reachable through the number 0 800 800 909.
Russia began its military assault on Ukraine last week, after President Putin’s announcement of the recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk on February 21.
The international community has condemned the invasion, expressing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The European Union, United States and several other countries have already imposed sanctions on Russia.
