Georgian Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia says that if the public will not observe coronavirus recommendations and rules the government will have to reimpose restrictions.

She stated that coronavirus cases are surging in Georgia and that the country ‘is technically ready’ for a third wave of coronavirus.

However, Gabunia said that ‘doctors are very much stressed and tired’ and it will be ‘hard for them’ to serve thousands of Covid-19 patients on a daily basis.

Gabunia stated that restrictions may be imposed again if more than two per cent of tested individuals test positive for coronavirus in two consecutive weeks.

Georgia has reported 897 new cases of coronavirus, 196 recoveries and 10 deaths in the past 24 hours which means that 1.94 per cent of tested individuals had the virus in the past 14 days.

Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze stated yesterday that new cases of coronavirus are surging amid the low rate of vaccination and wearing of face masks.

He said that currently 51 per cent of the country’s population wear face masks which is mandatory in open and closed locations and about 1,000 individuals are receiving the coronavirus vaccine on a daily basis.

11,603 individuals have received the coronavirus vaccine in the country since March 15 which is a low figure. We should vaccine at least 3,000 individuals daily,” Gamkrelidze said.

He stated that the supply of vaccines is sufficient.

Currently Georgia has AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines.

The country also received the Chinese Sinopharm vaccines last week and is expecting the Chinese Sinovac vaccine later this month.

However, these Chinese vaccines are likely to receive the approval from the World Health Organisation only by the end of April and Georgia will launch vaccination with the vaccines only after.
