Fourth Olympic medal for Georgia with Guram Tushishvili taking judo silver

Guram Tushishvili claimed a third silver - and a fourth medal overall - for the Georgian representation at the Summer Olympic Games after ending up second in the men's 100+ kg judo final in Tokyo on Friday.

Tushishvili contested the final against Lukas Krpalek of the Czech Republic on Mat 1 of Nippon Budokan arena, with the latter winning by Ippon after three minutes and 47 seconds of the fixture.

The result saw the 26-year-old Georgian - winner of last year's Düsseldorf Grand Slam, in addition to the 2019 World Championship and 2018 European Championship, along with other prizes - emerge with silver and add a fourth medal to the Georgian coffers at the Olympics.

His path to the final involved a Last 16 round win against Tajikistan's Temur Rakhimov, quarterfinal victory over Brazil's Rafael Silva and semifinal success against the Russian Olympic Committee's Tamerlan Bashaev.

Beside Tushishvili, the Georgian participation on Friday saw three-time Olympic medal-winner Nino Salukvadze denied a spot in the 25-metre shooting final after ending up 25th and outside the qualification roster.

Boxer Eskerkhan Madiev also competed on the day, losing to the Russian Olympic Committee's Andrei Zamkovoi in the men's welterweight division quarterfinal.

Concluding the day's competitions for the country, Sopo Shatirishvili was involved in women's shot put athletics qualifying, earning 15.31 points and ending up 16th.
