Georgian athletes have two medals after three days of competition at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, while tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili has reached the Last 16 round in the Japanese capital.

The silver earned by Lasha Shavdatuashvili on Monday, after his men's 73 kg judo final against local favourite Shohei Ono, follows the one earned by Vazha Margvelashvili on Sunday, to bring the national tally to two medals at the competition.

The result made Shavdatuashvili the first Georgian to earn three medals at Olympic Games while competing for the independent state. The wrestler took gold at the 2012 Games in London and bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

On his part, Basilashvili proceeded to the Last 16 round after defeating Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at Ariake Tennis Park earlier on Monday, with the match ending after two hours and 42 minutes.

In other fixtures of the day, boxing contests saw defeats for Sakhil Alakhverdov (48-52 kg section) and Giorgi Kharabadze (69-75 kg), losing to China's Jianguan Hu and Fanat Kakhramonov respectively.

Eter Liparteliani celebrated wins in women's 57 kg judo fixtures at Nippon Budokan arena against Diassonema Mucungui of Angola and Theresa Stoll of Germany, before she conceded the quarterfinal to France's Sarah Leonie Cysique.

Liparteliani won her subsequent repechage contest against Poland's Julia Kowalczyk in Session 6 of the day, but was on the losing side of the bronze fixture with Tsukasa Yoshida of Japan.
