Heavy rain has hit Batumi, the capital of the Georgian Black Sea region of Adjara, causing flooding in the streets and the central highway.

Head of the local water company Giorgi Siradze said all of the services of the Batumi City Hall are working in emergency mode.

We are fighting a natural disaster. Such a heavy rain has not come in the town for the last two years”, SIradze said.

As of now, traffic has been partially restored at the highway connecting Batumi and Makhinjauri.

Heavy rain hits western Oni municipality, damages 10 bridges, central highway

Heavy rain has hit 12 villages in Georgia’s western Oni municipality (Racha region). Ten bridges have been washed away by the Rioni River. Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s advisor for regional development issues Sozar Subari, Director of the United Water Supply Company Giga Mandaria, and Head of Emergency Management Service Temur Mgebrshvili will study the disaster on the ground.

Batumelebi’s source reported that this is not the first time ‘when the ground floor of the new building has been flooded’ noting that the water gets into the building from the soil as well.

Heavy rainfall has hit Black Sea coastal cities in Georgia today, including in Batumi and Ureki where flooding took place. Dozens of streets, homes and shopping facilities have been flooded in Batumi while in Ureki along with houses the police station was flooded to the point that law enforcers were unable to enter the building.
