Top US commander in Afghanistan Army General John Nicholson thanked Georgia’s contribution to military efforts in Afghanistan yesterday as a non-NATO member state.
Nicholson, who leads U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan, addressed the Senate Armed Services Committee this Thursday, reported Voice of America (VOA).
The top U.S. commander said he believes US-backed Afghan forces are "in a stalemate” in the 15-year-old war. He said that in order to break that stalemate, he needs "a few thousand” more soldiers to accompany the 8,400 U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Stressing the importance of US partner-countries fighting in Afghanistan, Nicholson mentioned Georgia’s impressive contribution to the coalition’s fighting force with the highest number of soldiers.
Georgia is currently the largest, non-NATO contributor to NATO Resolute Support Mission with 885 troops.
