Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey, has thanked rescue crews sent from Georgia and other countries to help with the search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake on February 6, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Monday.
Erdoğan met professionals from different countries involved in the relief works and was introduced to their efforts in Antakya, the capital of the southern Turkish province of Hatay that suffered major casualties and damage in the disaster.
Crews and hardware from the Special and Emergency Operations Centre of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs were deployed to help with the rescue efforts, following an initiative by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, starting with the beginning of the operations.
The latest figures show 41,156 people have been killed in the 7.9 magnitude tremors in Turkey, with the disaster also leaving 5,840 dead in the neighbouring Syria.
