Mayor of Tbilisi Kakha Kaladze on Tuesday said he was “proud to say” the country was “fully prepared” to host matches of the upcoming UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Kaladze accompanied Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to inspect the renovated Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi, which has been rehabilitated to host the Championship.
The Mayor highlighted the importance of infrastructure for the tournament and noted the stadium had been “completely updated” to UEFA standards. He also expressed his gratitude to the PM and the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze for implementing “very important” projects in Tbilisi and other regions hosting the event.
The most important thing is that such a large-scale tournament will be hosted by our country, and this provides an opportunity to better introduce Georgia to the world, to Europe, to show our hospitality, our culture, delicious cuisine, beautiful capital and regions. This is a very good opportunity that should be used”, Kaladze said in his comments for the local media.
Tbilisi City Hall said the Stadium’s renovation involved installation or update of cooling, heating, water supply, drainage, security and sound systems, along with new seats and electronic ticket gates.
A total of 10 stadiums were rehabilitated across Georgia for the Championship, which will be co-hosted by Georgia and Romania between June 21-July 8. Tbilisi, the western city of Kutaisi and the Black Sea city of Batumi will host matches in the former country.
