Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday inspected the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi, which has been rehabilitated to host the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Designated among facilities to host matches of the tournament, the venue has been equipped with "all necessary spaces" for athletes, journalists, camera crews and commentators, with new sound and security systems, seats and electronic ticket gates installed, the Government Administration said.
The newly overhauled stadium has also been granted UEFA’s “highest category” following the renovation, the press office added.
The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze informed the Government head in detail about the work done on the facility.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the Head of the Regional Relations Department of the Government Administration Leri Barnabishvili, the General Secretary of the Georgian Football Federation David Mujiri, and the Director of the Municipal Development Fund Davit Tabidze also inspected the works.
Ten infrastructural objects were built and rehabilitated in the run-up to the U21 Championship by the Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, with ₾115 million ($44 million) spent by the Government.
All stadiums have been equipped with UEFA-standard pitch and irrigation and drainage systems. The British companies Labosport and SIS Pitches worked to design, install and monitor the pitches for all stadiums.
The Championship will be co-hosted by Georgia and Romania between June 21-July 8, with capital Tbilisi, the western city of Kutaisi and the Black Sea city of Batumi hosting the games in the former.
