Romanian president Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday said his country remained “one of the most important supporters” for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, after signing a declaration on strategic partnership between the two countries with his Georgian counterpart Salome Zourabichvili in Bucharest.
Dubbing the document “historic”, the Romanian top official said it would further promote bilateral cooperation, as well as partnership to facilitate Georgia’s goals to integrate itself into the European Union and NATO.

Madam President, your visit has a very symbolic connotation. This year marks three decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Romania. In addition, we have created a historic moment by signing the declaration of strategic partnership, as we have laid the foundation for the strategic partnership between our countries as we agreed in 2019 in New York”, Iohannis told Zourabichvili.
He also suggested the document was expected to upgrade cooperation in transport, energy, as well as personal and people-to-people relations.
“Georgia and Romania resolve to elevate their solid partnership to the level of a Strategic Partnership.”

Congratulating Georgia on receiving the European perspective in June, the Romanian president pledged his country’s “strong” support on the path.

Of course, integration implies various structural, complex reforms, which are important from a political point of view, efforts in terms of modernisation, democratisation, which are important elements for Georgia’s joining the EU. I want to assure you once again, that Romania is your partner in this process”, he said.
The Georgian president is also scheduled to meet with the Romanian prime minister and parliament speaker before visiting the port city of Constanța.
