Romania supports Georgia's aspiration to become a member of the European Union, Răzvan Rotundu, the Romanian Ambassador to Georgia, said at a meeting with the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday.

The process of joining the EU is a “long one” and needs institutional changes and relevant reforms, Rotundu noted, adding countries that apply for membership must meet the Copenhagen Criteria, which include metrics on human rights and the rule of law.

Romania also supports the recent delivery of membership questionnaires to countries of the Associated Trio - Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine - the Ambassador said, adding the Governments would be expected to provide replies in a few weeks and noted Romania’s experience with the process had shown the results to be “multifaceted”.

The diplomat also emphasised Romania respected Georgia's support for international resolutions against the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.

We appreciate Georgia's efforts, and all the measures taken by the National Bank of Georgia, so that Russia does not evade sanctions. We also respect Georgia's support for all resolutions against the military conflict," Rotundu said.
