Cooperation between Georgia and Romania, and relations with NATO and the European Union were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili and Romanian defence minister Vasile Dîncu.

The meeting focused on future ties in the defence sector, with the officials noting the recently signed declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership would give a “new impetus” to the close relations between the two countries, the government administration said.

Garibashvili thanked the Romanian government for its “firm support” for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as for the country's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, and highlighted Romania's “significant” contribution to the EU monitoring mission along the line marking the Russian occupation of Georgian regions.

Garibashvili also stressed his government was ready to fulfil its obligations in order to “quickly make progress” on the path to joining the European Union.

The meeting also touched on the integration of Georgia into NATO and highlighted Romania's “significant contribution” to the implementation of the Essential NATO-Georgia Package.

They also reviewed security matters in the Black Sea region on the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
