Coronavirus: Georgia reports record-breaking 196 new infections, most in coastal Adjara

Georgia has reported 196 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, the highest figure since the country confirmed its first case of COVID-19 at the end of February.
145 of the 196 new patients are from the Adjara region of western Georgia.
The cases were distributed in:
- Adjara region - 145 cases
- Tbilisi - 29 cases
- Imereti region - 8 cases
- Gori - 4 cases
- Gardabani - 3 cases
- Zugdidi, Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti region - 2 cases
- Guria region - 3 cases
- Mtskheta-Mtianeti region - 1 case
- Poti - 1 case
Georgia has had 2,758 cases of the coronavirus. 1,412 of the 2,758 patients have recovered, while 19 others have died.

As of today 1,327 individuals remain infected with COVID-19 in the country.
Despite the recent surge in the infections, the country has no plans to declare a nationwide lockdown.

More than 490,000 people have been tested for the coronavirus in Georgia so far.
More than 1,500 people have been tested for the coronavirus in September alone on a daily basis, director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases Marina Ezugbaia stated earlier today.
Georgia’s Minister of Health, Ekaterine Tikaradze has stated today that all citizens entering the country will be placed under mandatory quarantine starting from today to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. New quarantine zones will be arranged at the Sarpi, Larsi and Red Bridje customs checkpoints.
All foreigners entering Georgia, including from Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – countries to which Georgia has opened its borders unconditionally – will be required to present PCR test results from the proceeding 72 hours to enter Georgia or undergo PCR testing at their own expense in a laboratory located at the airport.
Where is the virus spreading?
Georgia has reported a record 165 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, of which 109 were registered in the Adjara region of Georgia, 81 had contact with infected individuals and four cases are 'imported', said Medical Director of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Marina Ezugbaia.
Opposition Our Georgia – Solidarity Alliance member Gedevan Popkhadze has tested positive for coronavirus. The independent MP is one of six former ruling Georgian Dream party members who established an alliance back in June.
People entering and leaving Batumi will undergo thermal screening – if a high temperature is detected, individuals will be tested for coronavirus, said Natia Mezvrishvili, the head of the government administration earlier today.
Georgia has reported 179 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, marking a slight decrease in the number compared to yesterday’s 196 new infections. Georgia has had 2,937 cases of the coronavirus since February 26, 2020. 1,422 of the 2,937 patients have recovered, while 19 others have died.As of today 1,496 individuals remain infected with COVID-19 in the country.
The medical director of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Marina Ezugbaia told journalists today that a total of 187 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Georgia in the last 24 hours. Ezugbaia noted as well that 46 patients have recovered from the coronavirus.
A new record high of 196 coronavirus cases has been confirmed in Georgia since yesterday. 13 patients have recovered. Meanwhile, independent MP of Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo) Jaba Jushkariani who is a member of opposition Our Georgia – Solidarity Alliance has also tested positive for coronavirus.
Georgia has reported 227 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, which is a new record in the number since the country confirmed its first case of the virus on February 26, 2020. One patient has died of the coronavirus in the country in the past 24 hours and 69 individuals have recovered. The deceased patient suffered from cancer and had several other underlying illnesses. Georgia has had 4,140 cases of the coronavirus since the end of February 2020.1,643 of the 4,140 patients have recovered, while 24 others have died. As of today 2,473 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in the country.
