Georgia reports 179 new cases of coronavirus, breaking streak of increases

Georgia has reported 179 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, marking a slight decrease in the number compared to yesterday’s 196 new infections. 

Georgia has had 2,937 cases of the coronavirus since February 26, 2020. 

1,422 of the 2,937 patients have recovered, while 19 others have died.

As of today 1,496 individuals remain infected with COVID-19 in the country. 

The new 179 cases were recorded in:

  • Adjara region - 126 cases
  • Tbilisi - 15 cases
  • Imereti region - 16 cases
  • Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti region - 7 cases
  • Guria region - 4 cases
  • Mtskheta-Mtianeti region - 7 case
  • Kakheti - 4 cases

Georgia managed to maintain a low infection rate until September 6, 2020. 

Over the past several days the number of new infections has surged, reaching a record 196 daily cases yesterday.

However, state and health officials say that the infection has been localised (mostly in Batumi, coastal Adjara region of Georgia) and the government has no plans to declare a national lockdown for the second time. 

Health officials say that due to the early detection of the virus there are only six critical patients in the country.
