Georgia reports 165 new coronavirus cases

Georgia has reported a record 165 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, of which 109 were registered in the Adjara region of Georgia, 81 had contact with infected individuals and four cases are 'imported', said Medical Director of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Marina Ezugbaia.

The cases were distributed in:

  • Batumi, Adjara region - 109 cases
  • Tbilisi - 17 cases
  • Matani, Akhmeta municipality - 10 cases
  • Zugdidi, Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti region - 9 cases
  • Gardabani, Kvemo Kartli region - 9 cases
  • Gurjaani, Kakheti region - 6 cases
  • Gori, Shida Kartli region - 6 cases
  • Kutaisi, Imereti region - 4 cases
  • Ozurgeti, Guria region - 4 cases
  • Mtskheta, Mtskheta-Mtianeti region - 1 case

Currently five critical and 30 patients in severe condition are undergoing treatment at Covid centres, said Ezurgbaia. 

Meanwhile, only one individual recovered in Georgia within the last 24 hours. The total number of recoveries has reached 1,370.

Ezugbaia said that the reason the coronavirus spread in Gori and in the village of Matani is a wedding with 100 guests.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia announced that Matani will not be placed under lockdown, however the checkpoints of the police and tents offering coronavirus testing were set up at the entrance and exit of the village. Every citizen entering or leaving Matani is subjected to on-site thermoscreening and testing.

In order to detect the virus in a timely fashion and prevent its further spread the ministry announced that all residents of Matani will have to take a PCR test.

In total 19 people have died of the virus in the country, 5,882 people are in quarantine, and 41 citizens of Georgia have been transported home from abroad for treatment.

Since February 26, 2020 Georgia has had 2,392 cases of the coronavirus.
