Georgia hits record high of 196 coronavirus cases in one day

A new record high of 196 coronavirus cases has been confirmed in Georgia since yesterday. 13 patients have recovered.  

As of now a total of 3,502 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Georgia since late February, including 1,494 recoveries and 19 deaths.

The medical director of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Marina Ezugbaia said earlier today that out of the 196 new cases: 

  • 30 were reported in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi
  • 128 were reported in the region of Adjara
  • 19 were reported in the region of Imereti
  • 6 were reported in the region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti
  • 5 were reported in the region of Kvemo Kartli
  • 4 were reported in the region of Guria
  • 2 were reported in the region of Mtskheta-Mtianeti
  • 1 was reported in the region of Shida Kartli
  • 1 was reported in the region of Kakheti

Ezugbaia also noted that conditions of 14 infected individuals remains critical, including a 72-year-old man who was delivered to Batumi hospital yesterday with underlying diseases.  

Meanwhile, occupied Abkhazia has also confirmed 53 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of cases in the Russia-occupied region to 878.

An independent MP of Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo) Jaba Jushkariani who is a member of opposition Our Georgia – Solidarity Alliance has also tested positive for coronavirus.

Jishkariani is the third member of the alliance after Levan Gogichaishvili and Gedevan Popkhadze who tested positive for COVID-19 over a  week before.

Other members of the alliance have gone in self-isolation.
