Sixteen internally displaced families from Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia will have access to natural gas starting today.

3717 internally displaced families have been provided with access to natural gas since 2012.

Many of these families have been given living quarters in a formerly privately-owned building in the capital of Tbilisi since 1991.

Thousands were forced to leave the regions of Abkhazia in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to armed conflict. The Georgian Parliament passed a resolution in 2008 declaring Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) Russian-occupied territories of Georgia.

The Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees Sozar Subari said the ministry had taken ownership of the building and is in the process of transferring it into the possession of IDPs for free.

Subari said the number of families that have been given accommodations without charge exceeds 1,000.

The process of gasification that is underway all around the country is being implemented with great success”, Minister of Energy Kakha Kaladze said.

The most recent measures cost around 7,000 GEL based on ministry information.

Kaladze also said that the gasification of the country will continue until each and every citizen of Georgia has access to natural gas.
