29 families displaced from Tskhinvali receive new flats

29 internally displaced families from Georgia’s breakaway Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) have received new apartments today in the central Georgian town of Gori.

Apartments in a five-storey building donated by the Ministry of Defence were granted to those families who have lived up until now in the remains of wrecked and dilapidated buildings.

One citizen who received a new apartment said he and his family has been living under a wooden building for dozens of years in hardship.

We are very happy today to receive this nice and cozy flat”, he said.

Sozar Subari, Georgia’s Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees, personally distributed the keys to their new owners.

He said this is only a beginning in Gori and by this summer there will be no IDPs in Gori without fitting accommodation.

The submission of applications for granting flats to several hundreds of families in Gori that the ministry had announced earlier in January will soon come to an end. Construction of eight, 10-story buildings is underway intended to house another 480 families.
