Hundreds of internally displaced families will receive apartments in Georgia to ring in the New Year 2017 at new homes.

The applications for granting flats to 480 families in central Georgian town of Gori will start from January 3, 2017, stated Sozar Subari, Georgia’s Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees.

Moreover, IDPs were offered another building donated by the Ministry of Defence. In total 29 apartments will be granted to those families who now live under the demolished buildings.

As the Ministry stated last week, other 400 IDP families received flats at newly constructed buildings in the central parts of the capital Tbilisi and its surroundings as well. Minister Subari said 200 families from them will celebrate New Year at their new homes, while the rest 200 would move to new apartments by mid-January.

In his summarising speech at today’s Government Meeting Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili also focused on the issue. Prime Minister said around 13,700 IDP and 300 eco-migrant families have received apartments in total since 2012, while around 1,700 other families will move to their new apartments next year.

For those 1,360 families who prefer to live in the village and develop agriculture, the Government of Georgia would buy the houses worth 17,000-31,000 GEL in different parts of Georgia.
