Before the year ends the Government of Georgia is pledging to provide emergency housing to 400 of the most vulnerable Internally Displaced families.

Today Georgia’s Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees, Sozar Subari, said by the end of 2016, 400 of the country's most vulnerable Internally Displaced families will receive apartments in newly constructed residential buildings in capital Tbilisi.

Two hundred families will be gifted new homes in the Olympic Village near Tbilisi Sea, while the remaining 200 families will be housed in apartments on Dadiani St in Nadzaladevi district.

We will continue to support all Internally Displaced families who live in poor conditions, to have worthy living conditions,” Subari said today.

He noted a special commission was tasked to investigate the living conditions of Internally Displaced families and report it back to Government.

This will reduce the chance of a mistake that we gift a flat to someone who doesn’t deserve it and ensure these homes are gifted to the most vulnerable and worthy IDPs,” Subari said.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said in September alone 12,600 Internally Displaced families received new homes.

Currently there are about 280,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Georgia; about six percent of the country’s total population.

All of Georgia’s IDPs are either from Abkhazia or Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) – two regions of Georgia that are currently occupied by Russia.
