Voting has finished across Georgia and now the process of counting votes and tabulating results are underway.
All polling stations closed at exactly 8pm this evening. Preliminary results being tallied showed up to one million people cast their vote today in the second round of the Parliamentary Elections.
The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia released latest voter turnout figures a short time ago and the data showed 929,265 people voted today. This was 37.5 percent turnout.
Local and international organisations that observed today’s elections said the process was held in a mainly calm environment. They noted a number of procedural and other violations were reported but it was nothing that could have an impact on the overall results of the elections. However, they added all the incidents needed to be reacted properly.
Ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party Secretary Kakha Kaladze assessed the Parliamentary Elections 2016 as a success.
Today was one more step forward towards the development of democracy in our country,” he said.
The elections were held in a free, fair and competitive environment where voters had the chance to freely make their choice.”
He thanked voters for appearing at the ballot box and also for showing trust in Georgian Dream.
Meanwhile opposition United National Movement party leaders believed the elections were falsified.
One of the leaders of UNM Giga Bokeria said he wanted the election results to be nullified in southern Georgia’s Marneuli district as he said the elections were largely falsified there.
If oud demand about nullifying the election results isn’t satisfied, we will use all types of democratic protest,” Bokeria said.
