Georgia’s Prime Minister, Azerbaijan’s President meet in Baku

The top officials from Georgia and Azerbaijan are pledging to spare no effort to support and strengthen their "neighbourly relations” which have "truly strategic character”.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who today paid a one-day official visit to Baku, met Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev this afternoon.

"We are linked by joint projects in transportation and energy sectors. These projects are being implemented successfully and will benefit our nations and people,” Aliyev told his Georgian guest.

The Azerbaijani leader stressed relations between the two countries were "rooted in history”. They shared a "brotherhood [and] good neighbourly relations”.

"I am convinced that your visit will deepen these connections,” he told Kvirikashvili.
"As I already said, we share history, geography and common interests. The well-being of our countries and regional stability depend on the realisation of transport projects.”

Kvirikashvili expressed hope that the friendly relations between the neighbouring countries would continue to evolve.

"We spare no effort to support reinforcement of our neighbourly relations that have a truly strategic character,” he said.

While in Baku the Georgian delegation also met Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister Artur Rasizade.

Following the meeting the Georgian Prime Minister’s press office said the parties discussed prospects of bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the frame of the East-West transit corridor, and underlined the economic and geopolitical importance of the New Silk Road.

Particular attention was also paid to the role of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project and the significance of Georgia-Azerbaijan cooperation in the process of implementation of global energy projects, including the Southern Gas Corridor was also outlined.

Georgia and Azerbaijan are two neighbouring countries of the South Caucasus and are strategic allies in the region. These two countries not only share borders but also a long history of cohabitation.
