President Margvelashvili told Rasizade that agreeing to open the pipeline 20 years ago played a big role in Georgia and Azerbaijan’s development.

Meanwhile Georgia’s Prime Minister and Rasizade agreed the two nations still had "big potential” to forge a closer partnership especially in the fields of trade and economy, energy and transport.

The two leaders also emphasised Georgia and Azerbaijan played significant roles in international transit and were important players in the energy sector.

The  Georgian and Azerbaijani officials signed a deal to launch the Baku-Supsa pipeline  project in 1996. The pipeline has a total length of 830km and it transits about 7 million tonnes of oil annually (about 140,000 barrels per day).
