A Georgian judoka has claimed a gold medal at a prestigious International Judo Federation (IJF) competition in Kazakhstan.

Lasha Shavdatuashvili (73kg) - Georgian Olympic Champion of 2012 - triumphed at the Almaty Grand Prix, becoming the first Georgian to win gold at the tournament that started on May 13.

Shavdatuashvili sealed the gold after he defeated Czech sensation Jaromir Jezek in the final.

After more than three minutes in the final without a score, but just two penalties, Shavdatuashvili caught Jezek in an armlock when Jezek was in a defensive position with his arm out.

Before this, the same Czech judoka defeated Georgia’s Nugzar Tatalashvili in the semi-final. Tatalashvili won bronze.

Three minutes in the bronze match Tatalashvili won the match with a yuko, but it was enough for the victory against Frenchman Pierre Duprat. Despite the three penalties Tatalashvili received, he wanted to secure his bronze medal, so he did.

Today is the final day of the Almaty Grand Prix. Five Georgian athletes are set to compete this afternoon.
