Georgia’s national anthem has been heard several times in the Russian city of Kazan after several Georgian judoka won in their respective weight categories at the European championships this week.

Varlam Liparteliani’s performance at the European Judo Championships 2016 in Kazan was impressive; yesterday on day three he won the 90kg weight category for the third time.

Liparteliani became the second Georgian to win a gold medal at the competition, following in the footsteps of Vazha Margvelashvili, who was crowned European champion on the first day of the competition.

Also yesterday Levan Matiashvili (+100kg) won a bronze medal at the same tournament.

After the three days of competition Georgia has won seven medals: two gold, three silver and two bronze.

Tomorrow the team competition will begin to reveal the best European nation. Georgia will face Hungary in its first fight.
