Georgia’s Vazha Margvelashvili has triumphed in an International Judo Federation (IJF) competition held in Georgia's capital Tbilisi.

Margvelashvili competed in the men’s 66 kilogram category at the IJF Tbilisi Grand Prix at the New Sports Palace.

Margvelashvili became the first Georgian judoka to win gold at the two-day event that opened in Tbilisi yesterday.

With this victory, the Georgian athlete received 300 points, which will be added to his rating for qualifying for this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"This win has, in fact, sent the Georgian to Rio,” Georgia’s Sports Ministry said.

Meanwhile another Georgian, Aminar Papinashvili (60kg) won bronze at the first day of the competition.

Georgia’s capital is hosting the prestigious IJF competition for the first time.

About 400 leading judokas from 67 countries are currently in Tbilisi for the event.
