Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Saturday said the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili would highlight Georgia’s intention to play an “important part” of European energy security in the diversification process of energy resources supply to Europe at the Munich Security Conference panel discussion today.

Georgia has “acquired a new role” and “function” amid the new challenging geopolitical environment, Darchiashvili noted in his comments to the media, emphasising that the country’s intention to be part in European energy security was proved by the steps taken by Georgia in this direction, including the signing of an Agreement on the Black Sea Submarine Electricity Cable project in December for exporting green energy to Europe via Georgia.

By this deal signed between Georgia, Azerbaijan, Romania, and Hungary, Georgia will be assigned a “new role” in the future energy security of the European Union, the Foreign Minister said, adding the country’s “political affiliation” with the bloc, as well as projects to bring Georgia closer to the EU, was “very important”.

In addition to the panel discussion to be held on the sidelines of the ongoing Munich Security Conference, Garibashvili is also to hold meetings with the leaders of EU member states to focus on how to mobilise these countries for granting the membership candidate status to Georgia.
