Georgia’s Interior Ministry on Tuesday said its professionals had detained an individual for operating a fraudulent scheme that promised citizens illegal immigration into the United States via Mexico.
The state body said its investigation had established the offender, who has a criminal history, promised to illegally transport the citizens through Mexico to the US territory in exchange for upfront payments of $7,000 for each client.
It added the scheme had resulted in the arrested person obtaining $23,900 and €2,600 from their targets in the process, without fulfilling the promise of ensuring immigration.
The crime is punishable by six to nine years in prison.
