Internal transmission of Covid-19 Omicron variant has already started in Georgia, Head of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze reported earlier this evening.

Georgia has confirmed a total of 253 cases of Omicron strain since December 20, 2021.

NCDC head noted that the country reported 159 new Omicron cases earlier today, with 67% of the infected individuals being fully vaccinated, eight having received their booster shots and 16 being under the age of 18.

Gamkrelidze urged the public to get vaccinated and wear face masks in public spaces.

Georgia has reported 3,436 new Covid-19 cases, 1,805 recoveries, and 32 deaths in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate for the past 14 days stands at 5.87%.

Overall, ​​1,291,383 individuals have received at least one dose of any available coronavirus vaccine in the country so far, while 1,152,662 people have been fully vaccinated.
