Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, was elected as the Chair of the Democracy and Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe on Tuesday.
The election was part of the Assembly’s annual session in Birmingham, the press office of Georgian Parliament said while adding the Committee was “one of the most important formats” in the Assembly.
By being elected to the position, Samkharadze, the Georgian Parliament’s OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation Head, also became a member of the Bureau of the Assembly, which serves as its main decision-making body.
Samkharadze’s participation in the Assembly most recently involved his initiative on the body’s addition of a call for Russia to de-occupy Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions to a resolution on security environment and stability in the OSCE region on Monday.
