The Chairman-in-Office of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe has called on the Georgian political spectrum to work for more unity and more consolidation in the country, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) MP who chairs the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Wednesday following his meeting with Zbigniew Rau.

Asked whether the meeting had focused on questions on the imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili being taken abroad for medical treatment, or his release from prison, Samkharadze said the questions had been raised by Tina Bokuchava, a member of the opposition United National Movement party.

The answer [of Zbigniew Rau] was that decisions concerning Mikheil Saakashvili should be made by the Georgian court and all this should be done according to the Georgian legislation,” Samkharadze noted.

Samkharadze also said the OSCE official had called for more cooperation in the often polarised atmosphere of the Georgian political scene.

As part of his ongoing visit to Tbilisi, the OSCE Chairman-in-Office and Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau met with representatives of the ruling party and the opposition in Parliament.
