A new monitoring system will be installed for additional security in the landslide zone on Matchavariani Street and nearby slopes in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi, announces Tbilisi Deputy Mayor Irakli Bendeliani.

Bendeliani said that the decision was made at yesterday's meeting of the working group which unites local specialists as well as German geoengineers.

The working group will make available the preliminary survey results of the landslide zone by the end of the week, Bendeliani said.

German geoengineer Peter Neumann said that the safety measures taken, namely closing the road and imposing restrictions on site, are correct.

Currently, there is likely to be a large-scale landslide initiation phase and initial measures such as reinforcement, drainage and monitoring should be implemented. Quite a lot of rock layers have been released, which complicates the work process", Neumann said.

Matchavariani Street and the nearby slopes in Tbilisi have been put on landslide alert after a fissure appeared on slopes earlier this month.

Matchavariani Street has already been closed and specialists are already trying to identify the cause of the fissure.
