A residential building under construction will no longer be built on Lortkipanidze Street in the Saburtalo district of the capital city of Tbilisi, where a slope collapsed last night, and a construction company was fined 30,000 GEL (about $9,724/€8,267), announces Deputy Tbilisi Mayor Irakli Bendeliani.

Ninety families, residents of a ten-story building on Lortkipanidze Street, were evacuated last night after a slope near the house collapsed.

Bendeliani said that as a result of the accident, the probable cause of which is construction in the area, no one was injured.

As a result of the initial investigation conducted with specialists, the collapse of the slope near N10, Lortkipanidze Street was caused by incorrect and inconsistent management of the construction process... The design stage has already started, the aim of which is to strengthen the slope and, if necessary, the surrounding building", Bendeliani said.

Bendeliani said that the daily expenses of the 90 families evacuated from the residential building will be reimbursed by the municipality until there is a need for it.

He added that the families will be returned to their homes once 'we are fully confident that their lives in this building are safe'.
